The best nativity set for kids is one they're allowed to touch. If you want a set little ones can hold, move around and use to act out the Christmas story, look for solid, unbreakable pieces sized for small hands, a finish that's safe if it ends up in a mouth, and an age rating that matches your youngest child. Below is an honest side-by-side of four play nativity sets, including the one we make.
Quick background on why I care: I broke Baby Jesus on my mom's nativity two years in a row as a kid. When our own kids came along, I wanted a set they could play with, so I designed one.

Which one is right for your family?
For babies and young toddlers
Age ratings matter here. Our set is rated 0+, Little People is rated from 1 year, and the HABA and Melissa & Doug sets are rated 3+ and 4+. If you have a baby or a one-year-old in the house, those ratings narrow the field fast.
If you want lights and music
Little People is the only set here with sound and light, and it's also the lowest price. The trade-off is plastic and batteries, and it's a set kids tend to outgrow rather than pass down.
If you love the European heirloom look
HABA's set is made in Germany, with soft colors and a classic style. It's the most expensive of the four and is rated for ages 3 and up.
If you want a budget wooden set
Melissa & Doug's set is the least expensive wooden option and includes a stable. It's rated 4+, and their site listed it as out of stock when we checked.
If you want natural wood, made in the USA, for every age
That's why ours exists. Every figure is cut from solid hardwood in our Iowa workshop, sanded smooth, and finished with our organic beeswax and flaxseed mixture. There's no paint to chip and nothing to shatter, and it's CPSC Compliant and rated 0+. Kids can line the animals up, carry Baby Jesus around, and you never have to say "don't touch that." It's meant to come out every December for years.
What to look for in any kids' nativity set
- Unbreakable pieces. Solid wood or sturdy plastic, never ceramic, resin or glass.
- Size. Figures big enough not to be a choking hazard for your youngest child, and small enough for little hands to hold.
- Finish. For babies, a natural oil or wax finish, or no finish at all, is easiest to feel good about.
- The age rating. Check it against your youngest child, not your oldest.
- Storage. A bag or box keeps every piece together from one Christmas to the next.

Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus, three Wise Men, a shepherd, an angel, a camel, a cow, a donkey and a lamb, plus the stable, all in a cloth bag. See the set here.
